. Some time ago I did it after getting lens error message because some dirt in the gear mechanism. Anyway the unit looks to have some focus issue and drains battery so quickly from the beginning...maybe is time to move on another one.Thanx!

Thanx. That's it. I'll wait until even the manual mode or playback will stop working also, so I'll feel a little more comfortable to disable it a little beat more . It's not the first time when I clean the sand in it, it looks not very sandproof

I'm sorry, Soki, but I have no idea of what goes on inside the TX1. It sounds as though some contact is not being made that should be (or is being made and shouldn't be) in automatic and scene modes. Sand in the works does sound like a worry. I can only suggest that you go through the process again to make sure you have cleaned it all out.
Have you tried resetting? My manual does indicate a number of things cannot be reset. Presumably you have gone through the diagrams at http://forums.powershot-tx1.com/index.php?topic=136.0 which may indicate some thing that might be relevant? James |

Thanx James.
I 've just dismounted my tx1 and checked the mode selector switch. It looks fine. I put a little more tension in the connector slides. Unfortunately the problem is the same. Working ok in Manual and Playback, but only extending the lens then shut the power down when in automatic and scn mode. The fact that the unit is powering up for two seconds in auto and SCN, extend the lenses then turn the power off ( without retracting the lenses ) it's a bit strange. I read that resetting camera to defaults does not really make a full camera reset. Do you know if other kind of reset is possible? That's it. If not, maybe it will still work in M mode for a while...and...at least I cleaned my camera from the sand I've got in my last Holiday .Thanx! |

Alzuwaga had a similar problem. You might be able to take your TX1 apart to solve the problem. See http://forums.powershot-tx1.com/index.php?topic=323.0

I'd suggest that if you have a wide, clearly marked tape measure, hang it on a wall with about 8 feet (or about 2.5 m) showing.
Put the camera on a tripod about 6 feet (or about 1.8 m)from the tape measure, turned on its side to take a portrait format shot. Take two 4:3 format pictures of a section of the tape from the same position, (i) with, and (ii) without the lens adaptor. Check the pictures to see what length of the tape measure was covered, top edge to bottom edge, by each picture. Use the two measures to calculate the respective lens angles and then the relative 35 mm equivalent focal lengths. |

No idea; I'd have to shoot some known size and compare it. Any suggestions?

Hello,
my tx1 worked fine for two and a half years already, but suddenly it is not working on Automatic or Scene mode anymore. If I turn it on in M mode then, apparently, it's working fine, as before. If I switch it on SCN or auto mode, then it turns power off in two seconds, without retracting its lenses. Turning it on while in auto or SCN will only light the power led for couple of seconds, extend lenses and then shutdown ( lenses remain extended ) . I said that in Manual mode works fine "apparently", because it looks like it drains batteries faster then before, but I'm not sure if these behaviors are related or just coincidence. I have two batteries and the same behavior. I reset TX1 to default, I can enter the menu from M or play mode, but still the same behavior. Is there another reset type , a firmware reflash or another trick to try? Thanx! |

Thanks for the caution, cybercom. With so many posters in forums criticising MJPEG, I was beginning to think something was wrong with my logic. I have found it convenient for using as a 30 fps burst mode to capture useable low res frames from subjects in motion. With very large memory cards now available, I don't find its lack of compression a problem.

Again, thanks for the rapid reply and update. My need for a mobile phone is relatively low, but my experience with an iPod Touch which I was given as a present shows that it can be a small but extremely versatile swiss army style virtual-tool for the mind. I have previously been reluctant to buy all-in-one devices, because I often found them to be a group of second rate facilities. But I must admit that the Leatherman knife, and the iPhone do seem to offer a better deal. It fits with my desire to minimise my baggage, without reducing my assets. Like the TX1.

James, the new camera on the iPhone 4 is an order or two of magnitude better than the one on the 3G and 3GS. I've had both and the new one is astonishingly good compared to the old one, particularly for video which has gone 16:9 720p instead of 4:3 480p.
